The Richard Perrott family from Middlesex Co., Virginia • Comments? Corrections? Additions? Please write. |
The family founder was Richard Perrot (1622/3-1686) of Middlesex Co., Virginia, who is one of the earliest and best documented Parrotts on the North American continent. In turn, Richard was the son of Thomas and Margaret Parratt, and the grandson of John and Margaret Perrett, all of Potton, in Bedfordshire, England. The family has prospered since arriving in the colonies, and has grown enormously. Today, 1 out of every 5 Parrotts in the US belongs to this family. As might be expected for a family this size, records are missing for some of its branches. It is clear from Y-DNA testing that all the branches listed here are part of the same family. However, paper records have not been found that would explain how these are connected to each other. At least part of the family is thought to be descended from his brother, Robert. More information on the overall family s in the results page, along with the DNA results. |

Descendants of Amos Parrott (-at, -ett), born in Claiborne County, Mississippi, ~1848 Family ID #: 064a This is an African-American branch of the family. Amos' father is believed to be the Thorp Parrott who moved to Mississippi. This Thorp is descended from Nathaniel & Penelope Irby Parrott, though exactly how is still unclear.

Descendants of Daniel Parrott, b ca 1770, North Carolina Family ID #: 064i This group traces back to a Daniel and Susan Lucinda Parrott. In turn, Daniel was the s/o of Thomas and Celia Parrott from the main Richard Parrott family. This family branch was assembled long before the connection was made to the main family, and is being kept as a separate file simply because the main family file is so large. The descendants are in the Stewart and Houston counties of Tennessee. Another Parrott family in those counties is probably a branch of this one, but the connection has been elusive.
|
Descendants of Elias Parrott, b ca 1805, Campbell Co., Tennessee Family ID #: 064h Elias' birth date and county of birth identify him almost certainly as a grandson of Joel Parrott of the Richard group. Based on age and geography, James is the most likely father. However, this file is being kept separately from the main family pending more definitive data.
|
Descendants of James Nelson Parrott, b ca 1856, Stewart Co., Tennessee Family ID #: 064f How this family is related to the main branch has remained illusive. This family is thought to be part of another branch of the Richard Parrott family that is also in Stewart & Houston counties, Tennessee, that but there are no paper records found yet that would connect them, and the other family has not had a Y-DNA test to confirm the relationship.

Descendants of Richard Perrot of Middlesex Co., Virginia Family ID #: 064e There is more myth and misinformation around Richard Perrott than around any other Parrott. All trees to the contrary, Richard was not the son of John & Prunella Parrott, or of Sir John Perrot, or of James & Dorothy Parrott. He was baptized on 10 Feb 1621/22 in Potton, Bedfordshire, England, to Thomas and Margaret Parratt. Richard was a vestryman of Christ Church, a Commissioner of Lancaster Co. in 1656, elected High Sherriff on 5 June 1657 and Senior Justice of Middlesex County Court from 1673 until his death. He did not bear arms- with 3 pears or otherwise. Many reports to the contrary, Richard was not related to other contemporary Parrotts in Maryland and Virgigia (such as Francis, Lawrence, and William). Also contrary to many published reports, the weight of the evidence is that Richard only had one child, Richard Jr., and only married twice. Current spelling of last name is Parrott and Parrett.
This family is so large, that Richard's descendants have been moved into separate files:
